Story first: in 2013, an Italian developer looked at his modern terminal and thought ‘this is so boring’ — he missed the warmth of old CRT screens: scanlines, phosphor, subtle curvature. He spent years bringing that soul to modern computers. That nostalgia became 26k stars.

The Retro That Actually Works

cool-retro-term fully simulates the old CRT television screen — scanlines, phosphor glow, curved glass, 50/60Hz flicker, RGB aberration. But it’s no ornament: full VT100-compatible terminal, daily development, running programs — ‘looks good’ and ‘works’ both.

Why the Author Built It

Filippo Scognamiglio, Italian developer — day-job engineer, hobby open-source; also the author of Lemuroid (a 4k-star emulator). Motivation: bring the CRT aesthetic to modern screens — ‘eye-candy’ as a goal. For retro-computer players running old-system emulators, the terminal must be retro too.

Tested on macOS 15: download dmg, drag to Applications, right-click → Open if Gatekeeper blocks. Gotchas: no Windows build; KDE themes may need QT_QUICK_CONTROLS_STYLE=Material; full effects can fatigue — use low intensity for daily.
